A Young People's History of the United States
Links below updated 3/2015!
Please keep in mind this is under construction. Below I will slowly add links to the entire study. The resource that I am using as our "SPINE" is "A Young People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn (Adapted by Rebecca Stefoff). Each chapter will include vocabulary, worksheets covering each section of the chapter, lapbook mini-books, notebooking pages, games, and more.
As I get further along in the study I will add other units that will be side/bunny trails that will fill out the study. For example, Howard Zinn's book does not cover the 13 original colonies--in any great detail. So I will be adding that in. The Industrial Revolution will also be a side trip. I do not have these planned out just yet, nor do I know what all trips we will take. So bear with me!
My "Original" plan is for each chapter to last approximately 1 week. There are 26 chapters--so 26 weeks. The 13 colonies unit will last 3 weeks. I imagine the Industrial Revolution and other bunny trails will last about 1 week each. Eventually we will have 36 weeks worth of lessons.
There are 3 versions of Howard Zinn's book. A People's History of the United States; A Young People's History of the United States; and a 2 volume set of the Young People's History of the United States. The 2 volume version and the complete Omni version of the Young People's History are exactly the same. One is just larger than the other and the Omni version is actually cheaper than the 2 volume set. I am using the Omni version. I purchased it at Barnes and Nobles during Educator's week for 25% off. (around $15--Full price is $19.95) You can find it on Amazon for around $14 + shipping. My local library has both the People's version and the Young People's version; however, since I am using this as a full year's study--I decided it was a good idea to purchase my own copy. (The 2 volume set costs approx. $15 each)
Chapter 1 is already 31 pages! Please, when you are ready, do not print out every page. Just pick and choose which pages will work best for your family and/or class. I do NOT expect to complete all of the pages for my family--that would be overkill!!
Tests are being created and provided by Josh Drozdowski. He's a teacher in the St. Vrain Valley School District at the Digital Learning Academy. Thanks Josh!
