Mythology: Norse
Norse Mythology comprised of many different
God’s, 9 worlds, and various beings that are completely different from
Greek and Roman Mythology. Once the basic beliefs are understood, it
opens up and is very easy to comprehend. Keeping one’s mind open to
others beliefs is a fabulous way to learn and appreciate your own
beliefs.

Here are the pictures that I used for our stops on our expedition. Yggdrasil (the World tree with the 9 worlds) page is not colored. I did take the time to color it in before class.
The Nine Worlds and Yggdrasil The 9 worlds explanation: http://www.norse-mythology.com/The_Nine_Worlds.html
Lapbook: This is actually 2 mini-books. The first is a flap book with 9 flaps. The cover is on the first page, it is glued to the back of the second section which is on the second page. The answers are available on the third page. The second mini-book is on the Tree Yggdrasil. It is just a simple valley fold book. The answer is also available.

Meet the God’s
Norse family tree: http://www.windows2universe.org/mythology/viking_family_tree.html I am not making another mini-book for this. I will not have time to really go into the lineage of the God’s. We will go over the creation story, but not the actual family tree. For our project folder, the family tree will be in a page protector printed out from the pdf below. It is the exact same as the link above, just in a convenient .pdf file.

A fun project may be to draw a picture of the cosmic cow that nourished Ymir . . . Audumla is the cow’s name.

Toss in Some Stories: The Edda
From this site, I am making an “Edda” mini-book. http://www.mythencyclopedia.com/Ni-Pa/Norse-Mythology.html I used several other sites as well, but this was the main site. The Edda was originally poetically written. the poems told tales of valor and courage. They told the tales of great battles and the viking’s beliefs. For our edda, we will have it as a sort of encyclopedia. It will not be written in poetry. Though I can write a nice poem or two–I am not up to the task of writing 14 poems!! Below is the link to my edda. It has 14 pages that will cover some basic beliefs, the Gods and their role, and some specialty “people” such as the Valkyries and Dwarfs and Elves.
Norse Edda: http://www.mediafire.com/?irqqvg7qvkx6urr
Online information site that has a couple of links that you can use. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory/vikings/beliefs_and_stories/ I THINK it has some games on it . . . if I remember correctly!
RUNES Or FUTHARKS!
This website http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/vikings/runes.html not only has a great example of the runes, with clickable runes that will give you a clip art image of the rune and the explanation of it, but it also has a box that you can type a name into it and it will give you the RUNIC Spelling of the name. For my class I will type in everyone’s names and print them out and cut them apart so everyone has their own. Then on the mini-book below, I will have them copy their runic names onto the cover so it will say “T8ermomma’s Futharks” But the T8ermomma part would be in Runes! Please keep in mind that the word FUTHARK is taken from the names of the first 6 runes. F. U. TH. A. R. K. It’s like saying ABC’s.

Art projects:
Viking ship–made out of art foam:http://craftsforkids.com/projects/viking_longboat.htm I will use this pattern for the Viking ships. These will go in their project folders in page protectors as well. Check out the next one before making your choice!!
While preparing everything for this class I found that the pattern is just too small for my purposes. I have enlarged the viking ship and you can get it here: http://www.mediafire.com/?vvq38vzvz5v837k this I printed out on cardstock. I then had them cut out circles for shields and we attached them with brads. I then made a Noreseman with a clothespin Doll by coloring them with markers and using a bit of cloth to create a robe (Velcro tabs to close it).
Awesome viking ship instructions out of a tissue box! http://www.crayola.com/coloringcraft/craft/printer.cfm?id=937 I don’t have the time to do this one in class. THOUGH I WOULD LOVE TO! This is a fabulous little viking ship!!
Activity ideas: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/primaryhistory/vikings/beliefs_and_stories/includes/activities/pdfs/vk_beliefs_and_stories.pdf I was going to use the “Paint a Viking Monster” idea. Basically after we have our Viking Expedition where we find out about the “viking Monsters” such as Giants and Valkyries then we will take a few minutes and paint a picture of what they think they look like. These we will keep after they dry and put them in their project folder.
