Mythology: Egyptian
All the while I was working at this I just
kept hearing the Bible School song “Pharaoh Pharaoh, Let my people go”
ringing around in my head. Very distracting!! Especially for someone who
hears every word she reads in her head. It was getting very noisy in
there!! This was a very easy unit to put together. There are so many
resources available on the internet that really a person could just pick
and choose without too much worry. It’s all available! For our unit, we
are going to discuss Pharaohs, Pyramids, gods, Mummies, and
Hieroglyphs. Should be a fabulous time as long as we don’t get too much
sand in our shoes!
Resources
Local Library once again! I found a great book called Egyptian Mythology by Don Nardo. (call num. 299.31) This was in the Juvenile section. This book is just a wonderful resource. It has their creation tales, tales of the Gods and it also has questions for discussion at the end of each chapter. It’s not a hard read, but it would be really hard for my age group. I am going to use it to read a story or two.
Pharaohs
Since the Egyptians believed that pharaohs were living gods, I can’t do this study without adding them in. We will be doing a Craft project that will create a “LIVING” or moving rather, Pharaoh. you will find the download available on Dynamic2mom’s Website. You will need to scroll about 2/3 of the way down the page to the download of Pharaoh Narmer. Sorry I can’t give you a direct link to the .pdf! You will need 7 brads for this.

I didn’t print out anything but page 1. I then used construction paper that was a sandy color (I trimmed it to be the letter size paper) to attach the pharaoh to. I also made sure that his head could turn all the way down so that he would fit in my page protector.
The Gods
There are a lot of Gods. This study will only introduce 9 of them. Unfortunately we won’t have more time than that. Some of the God’s introduced will be Ra, Amun, Hathor, and Horus. This activity will also help re-enforce alphabetical order. Once the book is put together, all the God’s are placed in alphabetical order.

Pyramids
This is a pop up book! I found the original .pdf here: http://www.popupbooks.com/surprise.html And though it had no actual directions I was able to figure it out. Their pop up is really TINY and wasn’t exactly going to work for our project folder so I revamped and gave it a face lift!
Here is the bigger pyramid: http://www.mediafire.com/?5vuhw7p3106jkz5
There are info boxes that explain why they built them and answers the question of HOW!
Mummies!
YIKES! It’s ALIVE! Oh wait no it’s not! Just a mummy! I have located a mummy mini-book for our books but that isn’t the only thing we are going to do with the mummy section. We are going to mummify a doll! Well ok, we won’t remove any of the organs, but we’ll chat about it, and we won’t actually leave “her” burried in Natron for 40 days, but we are going to wrap her up and talk about all of the steps. Which brings me to the mini-book. This mini-book tells the steps of mummification! It is on Homeschoolshare.com

There are a lot of other great resources on this web page to go with this mini-book. But this is the only one I’m using . . .

Hieroglyphs: Without their form of writing, we wouldn’t know their history or anything about their beliefs. Besides, being able to see your name in written in a new language is just a fun thing to do!
This mini-book: http://www.mediafire.com/?vs9tk0s28dz23vc provides the cartouches for 3 pharaohs and a space to paste in the student’s name. You can find a translator by visiting this web address.

Another fabulous idea, and I’d love to do this but I don’t think it would be a good idea to cut the potatoes ahead of time–they would brown. So I’d leave this for an at home only project! But it’s making hieroglyphic stamps out of potatoes!! FUN!!
