Fun With Finances . . . A Simulation
This is our next Co-op Class. It is for the Scholar's Age group==basically 12 +. I'm shooting for a 9th grade project. It will practically be a "game of life' type game. They will have income, rent, utilities, loans, checking accounts, college assistance to pay back, and will even play the stock market. We'll discuss saving for rainy days, budgets, college bound earnings vs. high school grad earnings. And the list will go on. Again we will have 8 weeks. Class begins in April. (Please keep in mind that this lesson plan is currently under construction)

Class Outline
This will be based on the Lesson Plan below (Life In . . . United States). FEFE has it outlined for 10 days. I will be rescheduling it to fit our 8 week (8 day) schedule. All materials will be as listed below. The links below (and on the tab above) will take you to the specifics covered for that day.

Week 2: What do you make and what's it going to take?

Life In . . . United States
Lesson Plan provided by: Family Economics & Financial Education (FEFE).
This lesson plan is a simulation that covers 18 family profiles (total of 25 individuals with married couples). Each profile has a family situation, their income (including paycheck, insurance, retirement plan, etc) housing options, transportation options, credit cards, etc. This is a 2 week lesson plan that I will (10 days) into 8 weeks (8 days). Each student will have their own 1/2 notebook that will contain the family information, spending plan worksheet(s), etc. They will need 10 dividers. I plan
You do have to join to be a member of FEFE (http://fefe.arizona.edu/) to gain access to the files. I signed up as an educator with my "school" being Shiver Academy. My husband being the administrator. I used our address/phone number as contact information. I also used my blog as our school website. It does take a bit of time to gain access to the site (overnight in my case) but it is well worth it. THE LESSON PLANS ARE FREE TO DOWNLOAD!! (Which is why I saw no need to recreate this fabulous simulation!!)
ps: I am using Life In . . . United States (the bottom one--the top one has a 5 day schedule). there are other versions available including 2 specific state ones (North Dakota, and Montana).

Writing Checks
The above simulation does not cover check writing and balancing a check book. I think this is very important for everyone to know. So I will be adding it in as a new element. Basically any expense they have (such as utilities, rent/mortgage, insurance, etc) they will have to create a check for. Endorsing checks will be taught as well. they will have to endorse their paychecks and any other bonus checks they receive.
There are tons of printables available on line so I don't think I will be creating my own checks and checkbook register for this. Also I will have them fill out a signature card to explain what it is and what it's used for. This is all vital information that teens need to know.

Playing the Stock Market
As a bonus/fun perk, and only during the week--not during class time, we will have a class stock market challenge. Everyone will sign up online at
http://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com
I can create a "classroom" challenge and we can compete to see who is the most stock trading savvy. Each week we can take a quick look at the leader's board to see who is in the lead. I'm thinking (no the smoke alarms are NOT going off!) that I will have a small prize for each week's winner, with a bigger prize for the final winner. Still undecided though on what to give each week, but I think a 100 Grand Candy bar might be perfect. Not sure on the final winner prize though.
