Idaho History Week 6:
Idaho Government
This week we will have a lot of ground to cover and not much time.
And it’s a tough lesson to cover with minimal time as well. So you are
going to need to hit the floor running as they say. This week we will
cover the 3 branches of Government: Executive, Legislative and the
Judicial.
Beginning with the Executive branch we will cover the Governor and all those fabulous people that lead our state. I have created an accordian fold with flip outs. This is to help go over not only Who is who but also wha they do. There are a couple of options with this–you can have everything already assembled and just roughly run through it. You can have their names left off and have the kids pull one out of a hat at a time and go over that person. Kind of making this into a game. Or you can just have the names on and have them attach the descriptions to the fold. This is entirely up to you. I will be turning it into a game. it takes a bit more time, but not by much and the kids will have more fun with it. For those studying other states than Idaho–please just change the names to your officials. Or leave it off entirely.

The Legislative Branch is a tougher job to teach. It’s a hard concept for some of the kids to grasp. I have created a pocket with tabbed cards. The cards have a summary of the tasks given to both the House and the State Senate. This can be used for any state. If you are doing Idaho though, I have also added in a card that can be affixed to the back of each one listing all the CURRENT Represenatives and Senators. Please be sure to check for an update on this if it is much beyond Feb. 2010. OR if you are studying a different state, you can easily create this list by visiting your state’s official website (usually listed as “state”.gov such as Idaho.gov)

The Judicial branch is a basic subject. I didn’t go in depth with this as I knew we were going to be really short on time at this point. But I do have a mini-book that has 2 questions concerning the Judicial branch. The first is what levels are there, the second is what is the task they are given. Both questions have an answer available, but you can easily leave that off and have the kiddos do their own research if you have time.

And that’s a wrap. I know it’s a lot. I’m hoping that the parents will be able to review this information with them later as it really is a LOT to take in during one hour.
