Idaho History Week 5:
Modern Idaho History
Wow already 1/2 way through this session! I can’t believe how fast this is going.
To begin class we finished up the Famous People mini-book that we had started last week. Now we only had 2 left so this really took hardly no time at all. So after a quick run though, we moved on to what this week was all about.
Idaho Industry maps
To begin, we took a look at some of Idaho’s main industries. Agriculture, Mining and Forestry. We used the remaining pages in the map packet to work on this project. Using the page with the 3 small maps, I had the kids transfer the information by coloring in the counties for each industry–striping counties that contain more than one industry. The kids were then able to see just how Idaho breaks down and where our main industries are centered.
Here is a quick link to the map packet in case you don’t have these!
Next, we took a look at Idaho’s Timeline. Now I already had these all assembled and so I just had the kids skim through the time line really quick so they were familiar with it. I then sorted them into two teams. Each team had 6 kiddos. I then pulled out a baggie with Timeline date cards. These are just random years that are found on the timeline. I had each team send one player up at a time and had them pick a card. They then read out the year. Their team was given 60 seconds to find the date AND read it out loud. We then went on to the next team. I did NOT keep score as each team just bounced back and forth, each accomplishing the task every time. We did not go for winners, just the information. So though I called it a game, it really wasn’t much more than a fun way to cover the information.
Here is the timeline: The cover of the timeline is found on the last page. just cut it all out, and with the Earliest date on top layer the pages. Then add the cover to the top of the stack.
Here are the cards for the game: This is a stack of 15 cards. These are just random though I did make sure that 1890 is included to mark Idaho’s Statehood.
Now as all games require a winner, I just decided they were all winners–they won information!! I did provide a quick snack/treat for my winners! and let the last few minutes of class be for visiting and/or working on their Sacagawea drawing they worked on last week. Most were done, but a few of the girls wanted to work on them some more.
This class was pretty fun. It did end before we knew it was over though–Time flies when you’re having fun as they say!
