Idaho History Week 7: State Symbols
Well this week we had a fun relaxing time. We didn’t need to rush to
get it all in so we had some time to to just play with it. In fact we
finished a few minutes early and took a run out side in the gorgeous
sunshine.
The first thing we did was make sure everyone one’s folders were ready. as next week will be our last week I made a point of having everyone look through their folders to make sure all their mini-books were there, their maps etc.
State Symbols Booklet
We then proceeded to review the state symbols. Many of my students already were familiar with them so this was real quick. Much quicker than I had anticipated. I began by asking what the word “Appaloosa” meant to Idaho. What “Star Garnet” meant. and various other things. Once we began hitting some the kids weren’t familiar with, I introduced them to the booklet that was to be glued in.
The booklet I originally picked up from a website, I believe it was Edhelper, com but I can’t find it again so I can’t be sure. I have altered it considerably to fit in our folders and to actually be a booklet.

This will not work for any other state as it contains only Idaho State symbols. I realized belatedly that I neglected to add the state Flag to this. (WHAT was I thinking????) But we have a worksheet for the Flag as well.

After reviewing everything in the booklet, we colored the pictures and then reviewed the Flag. I gave the students some time to work on the question for the back of the worksheet.
At this point the kids were getting restless with the need for sunshine so we tossed our folders away in the box and headed out for some running in the sun.
